Who Is Grange Insurance?
Grange Insurance is a regional property and casualty insurer headquartered in Columbus, Ohio. Operating in 13 states across the Midwest and Southeast, Grange offers personal and commercial insurance products including home, auto, life, and umbrella coverage. What sets Grange apart is their deep focus on the communities they serve — they know the Midwest, they understand its weather patterns, its housing stock, and its drivers.
Unlike massive national carriers that spread their attention across all 50 states, Grange concentrates on doing fewer states exceptionally well. This focused approach allows them to price more accurately and offer coverage options specifically tailored to the regions where they operate, including Illinois, Indiana, and Minnesota — three of the four states where Better Choice Insurance Group is licensed.
History & Heritage
Grange Mutual Casualty Company was founded on March 25, 1935, by an Ohio farmer named John Haaf. The story goes that Haaf noticed his auto insurance premium had increased from $10 to $12 for a six-month policy and decided there had to be a better way. He formed Grange as a non-profit corporation under the General Code of Ohio, initially limiting sales to Ohio State Grange members — members of the agricultural fraternal organization.
In those early years, Grange was run out of a house in Columbus, Ohio. But the company grew steadily. In 1942, they introduced hospitalization coverage. In 1944, general liability was added. Fire and extended coverages became available in 1955. A transformative moment came in 1958, when Grange became independent of the Ohio State Grange and began offering its products to the general public. Grange Life Insurance Company was formed in 1968, further broadening their product line.
Today, Grange operates in 13 states including Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and several others. In 2024, Grange received AM Best’s prestigious “Standing the Test of Time” designation for maintaining an A (Excellent) or higher rating for 50 consecutive years — a testament to their stability and disciplined management.
What Grange Is Known For
- Midwest expertise: Grange understands the unique risks of the Midwest — hail, wind, harsh winters, and freeze-related claims. Their pricing reflects this deep regional knowledge.
- Competitive home insurance rates: Grange is frequently the most competitively priced carrier for homes in Illinois, Indiana, and Minnesota, particularly for well-maintained properties in suburban and rural areas.
- Innovation leader: AM Best rated Grange’s innovation capabilities as “Prominent,” placing them in the top 10% of all reviewed insurance companies. This means they are continually investing in better products and technology.
- Strong agent relationships: As an independent agent-only carrier, Grange is deeply committed to the agency channel. They do not sell direct — every policy goes through an agent like Better Choice.
- Mobile app and digital tools: The Grange Mobile app lets policyholders pay bills, view coverage, access ID cards, and request roadside assistance with real-time tow truck tracking.
- Community involvement: Grange is well known for their community giving, including a high-profile naming rights partnership with the Grange Insurance Audubon Center in Columbus.
